who do you think you are?
The Sabrina Starke Sound System (2018) is a project by Brian Elstak in collaboration with Ellik Bargai. It's an ode to many generations of powerful black women in their role as creators, guardians, activists and queens. In the portraits, Sabrina Starke’s face is recognisable. The panels are also an ode to the music that has bumped through the speakers and boom boxes over the past decades, forming the soundtrack to many lives around the world.
The work was presented to the public on Friday the 28th of September 2018, at TENT Rotterdam during the 'Who Do You Think You Are?' group show opening. An initiative by Sabrina Starke, made possible in collaboration with TENT and Charl Landvreugd. 'Who Do You Think You Are?' features work by nine visual artists. Seven of them made new work. The 'Sabrina Starke Sound System' was one of those.
